Which BMW ConnectedDrive services stay with the car after it is sold

dayanother.com Editorial Team ·

Under BMW of North America’s ConnectedDrive Terms for qualifying U.S. vehicles, the telematics hardware stays in the car, and some Included Services—or a paid Standard Service Plan for the rest of its term—may continue with the vehicle after a sale. Trial Service Plans do not transfer that way, and the seller’s My BMW account, remote lock and location access, and auto-renewal billing stay with the seller until that person disconnects the car and cancels or terminates the plan.

What follows the car, and what stays with the seller

  • Still works: The factory telematics unit stays in the car. For qualifying U.S. vehicles, Included Services that BMW NA provides free of an extra charge—excluding Trial Service Plans—may stay with the vehicle for the next owner or lessee. A paid Standard Service Plan may also stay with that vehicle for the rest of its term unless BMW NA or the subscriber terminates it.
  • Stops working: Trial Service Plans are carved out of that vehicle transfer rule. You may not move ConnectedDrive Services from one vehicle to another. Selling the car alone does not cancel auto-renewal, so the seller’s billing can keep running until that person cancels or terminates the plan.
  • Needs subscription: After any Included or trial period, map enrichments and other digital extras that BMW NA sells as Standard Service Plans—such as BMW Digital Premium where offered—require a paid monthly or annual plan on a qualifying vehicle.
  • Needs previous owner removed: Personalized remote features such as remote door unlock and vehicle finder become available only after a ConnectedDrive subscriber agreement, account use, and any required fees. On My BMW Garage, a ConnectedDrive subscription keeps the vehicle linked until the subscriber disconnects ConnectedDrive; a title transfer alone is not described as closing that app link.
  • Can work offline: Remote lock and vehicle location need the wireless path the Terms describe for Services. BMW USA’s ConnectedDrive page says Apple CarPlay and Android Auto do not require ConnectedDrive. Cloud BMW Maps features and live remote app controls are not framed as offline account-free tools.

What sits in the car, and what sits in the BMW account

BMW NA’s ConnectedDrive Terms describe Services that run through an embedded telematics control unit in the vehicle. That unit is hardware. It can talk to wireless networks and use GPS. Your vehicle’s limited warranty can cover that telematics unit as equipment, while the Terms say the warranty does not cover the Services themselves.

The account side is separate. BMW USA’s ConnectedDrive page treats ConnectedDrive as the digital service platform and the My BMW app as the phone interface for remote jobs such as lock, unlock, and locate. Creating a BMW ID, linking the vehicle, activating ConnectedDrive, and logging into the car are the activation path that page names. Personalized Services—including advanced real-time traffic information, remote door unlock, and vehicle finder where available—only become available after a ConnectedDrive Subscriber Agreement, acceptance of the Terms, any required fees, and use of the online accounts or apps.

Navigation is easy to mix up with remote access. The screen and map software in the dash are in the car. BMW Maps on the ConnectedDrive overview is described as a cloud-based navigation experience with live updates, and Automatic Map Updates appear there as a ConnectedDrive service. BMW Digital Premium, where offered for Operating System 9 vehicles, can include map enrichments as a paid subscription. Service availability still varies by model, options, and software.

What changes when the car is sold

Section 17 of the U.S. ConnectedDrive Terms is the transfer rule for qualifying vehicles. Included Services that come free of an extra charge from BMW NA may stay with the vehicle from one owner or lessee to the next, but Trial Service Plans are excluded. Paid Services after the Included term, including a Standard Service Plan, may stay with that same vehicle for the remaining term unless BMW NA or the subscriber ends them. The same section forbids moving those Services from one vehicle onto another.

That is not the same as handing the seller’s login to the buyer. Primary Subscribers manage the account and can add Secondary Subscribers. Remote lock and location run through that account path. My BMW Garage says that when BMW learns you are no longer the legal owner or lessee, the vehicle can drop from the Garage automatically—but if you are still a ConnectedDrive subscriber, the vehicle remains until you terminate the subscription. Garage copy also says a ConnectedDrive vehicle may need a “Disconnect BMW ConnectedDrive” step before deletion is complete. A bill of sale does not, by itself, close the app.

Billing is another trap. The Terms say disconnecting or removing your account from the vehicle, selling or transferring the vehicle, or disabling the related hardware does not cancel auto-renewal of Subscription Services. If you sell during a Standard Service Plan, you must either request termination through BMW Assist Customer Care or cancel auto-renewal in the car, in My BMW, in the app, or by phone. You remain responsible for charges until you do. BMW NA may also terminate the Service Plan after it is notified of the sale by you, a dealer, or a new owner or lessee.

Fair comparison with What a Peloton can still do after the membership ends: on Peloton, the paid membership that feeds classes does not travel with a sold bike as the buyer’s login. On BMW’s U.S. Terms, some vehicle-bound Included or paid Services may continue on that VIN for a remaining term, but the seller’s account, remote app access, and auto-renewal obligation do not become the buyer’s just because the title changed. Which Tesla connectivity features stay with the car after it is sold depends on Tesla’s own rules; this page only claims what BMW’s U.S. pages state.

What the buyer and seller should open before money changes hands

Open the BMW ConnectedDrive Terms that govern BMW of North America Services. The copy opened for this article on September 29, 2026, is marked Last Updated February 28, 2025, and is published as BMW’s U.S. ConnectedDrive Terms PDF at https://www.bmwusa.com/content/dam/bmw/marketUS/common/connected-drive/pdf/2025/BMWAssist_TERMS_and_CONDITIONS_2014_later.pdf. Read section 7 on cancelling a Standard Service Plan when you sell, section 16 on removing a vehicle from a ConnectedDrive account, and section 17 on which Services may stay with the vehicle.

Also open BMW USA’s ConnectedDrive overview at https://www.bmwusa.com/explore/connecteddrive.html for what Remote Services, BMW Maps, and Digital Premium are described to do, and the note that feature availability differs by model. Then open My BMW Garage help text at https://mygarage.bmwusa.com/ for how a ConnectedDrive subscription keeps a vehicle listed until the subscriber disconnects it. In the car and in My BMW, confirm which plan is active, whether auto-renewal is on, and which BMW ID still shows as linked.

What each person does before the handoff

For the seller, the U.S. Terms require action on the paid plan when the car is sold or the lease ends. Call BMW Assist Customer Care at 1-888-333-6118 to request termination of the Standard Service Plan, or cancel auto-renewal in the vehicle, online in My BMW, in the My BMW app, or by that same phone number. Separately, remove the vehicle from the ConnectedDrive account at https://connecteddrive.bmwusa.com, through the My BMW app if available for the vehicle, or by calling Customer Care. My BMW Garage describes using Delete and, when prompted, Disconnect BMW ConnectedDrive so the subscription link ends. The duties section also requires notifying BMW of an ownership change.

For the buyer, BMW USA’s ConnectedDrive page says activation starts with a BMW ID, linking the vehicle, activating ConnectedDrive Services, and logging into the car. Registration can go through the My BMW app or My BMW Garage and needs an active SIM in the vehicle. A new Standard Service Plan, where offered, can be started in the vehicle, in My BMW, or in the app after the subscriber agreement and payment steps those Terms describe. If a prior paid term still sits on the vehicle under section 17, confirm what the ConnectedDrive Store and account show for that VIN.

This page only describes the removal and new-owner steps those BMW pages publish for a normal sale. It does not describe ways to keep app control of a car you no longer own.

One fact that belongs on the transfer checklist

Disconnecting the account, selling the car, or even damaging the subscription hardware does not cancel auto-renewal of a Standard Service Plan under BMW NA’s ConnectedDrive Terms. The seller stays on the hook for charges until that person cancels auto-renewal or terminates the plan through the channels the Terms list. That is why a clean title alone is not enough.

The mistake that leaves remote access and a bill behind

The harmful mistake is assuming the seller’s paid term and remote app access both moved with the title, or reading one model year’s brochure as every BMW. Trial plans do not follow the car under section 17. Remote lock and location can remain available to the previous account until ConnectedDrive is disconnected. Auto-renewal can keep charging the seller after the keys change hands. Feature lists still depend on the specific vehicle’s options and software. Treat the map screen, the cloud plan on the VIN, and the BMW ID on a phone as three different things, and close each the way BMW’s U.S. pages describe.
